Sassy Pineapple Door Hanger
Today we’re going to be painting this sassy pineapple door hanger! Isn’t she the cutest?! She’s ready for anything – especially a summer day. I love her sassy attitude – between her funky “hair,” her stylish sunglasses, and that smile that’s very nearly a smirk, this girl has a LOT of personality. But you can tell she’s still sweet. Maybe that’s why I like her so much!

Come along with me as I paint this sassy pineapple door hanger – I’ll show you what I did every step of the way to bring her to life so you can learn to paint her, too!

DIY Your Own Sassy Pineapple Door Hanger
“Be a pineapple. Stand tall, wear a crown, and be sweet on the inside.”
Have you heard that saying? I just love it. I think it sends such a great message about being kind. And being kind and positive is so important – every day. Standing tall and wearing a crown also sounds like taking pride in yourself and being fancy sometimes are good things, too. Who could argue with that?!
When starting on this sassy pineapple door hanger project, I started with a blank that was not etched and I simply drew in the design freehand. What would have been easier, and what you may want to do, is start with a ready-to-paint cutout blank that is etched. The etching makes it easy even for beginners! It’s just like paint-by-number kits you did as a kid. But you can also cut out your own door hanger at home using my printable template and digital cut file.

Here, I’m painting a 20″ size cutout blank of the sassy pineapple, which is the perfect size for a door hanger. But in my shop, you can also choose several other sizes for this pineapple, depending on how you want to use your project in your decor. I think this sassy pineapple looks perfect just about anywhere, whether as porch decor or a decorative painted wooden sign to display!

Grab Your Supplies and You’re Ready to Go!
To get started, paint a coat of yellow on the pineapple part. I started with primary yellow, but found it was a little too dark, so I lightened it up with a bit of white. That gave me the just-right, bright but light yellow I was looking for.
I used a medium sized brush, but found that my brush strokes were showing. By using a larger brush and adding some water to my paint, I was then smooth out the paint and give it almost a second coat.
TIP: Try to keep your brush going in the same direction. This makes your brush strokes much less noticeable.
Now we’re going to turn the door hanger around so we can paint the top of the pineapple. I think you’d call this part the fronds.
I used festive green for this part. It’s a bright green – what we call “John Deere green” here in the South!
TIP: Use a small – less than 1/4″ – brush to work around details, like the area between the sunglasses and the flowers.
Time to Dress Up our Sassy Pineapple Door Hanger

Now it’s time to give our pineapple the fun, happy details that turn her into a sassy pineapple!
Let’s start with her sunglasses. I chose true red. Dabbing the paint on in spots and then using your brush to make it smooth helps get an even finish on these glasses.
Next it’s time for the fun flowers. They just scream summer, don’t they? I wanted to use bright, happy colors, so I went with peony pink and laguna, which is like a turquoise shade. I decided I wanted to use more of the laguna, so I painted the outside flowers with that and the one in the middle with peony pink.
Let’s Add Some Details!
Now it’s time to paint the inside of the sunglasses black.
We’re getting there, but our sassy pineapple still needs more style. I took citron green and a small brush to add some bright, little highlights to the top of the pineapple. It makes her look like she has funky hair – so cute!
Now for the middle of the flowers, I wanted to choose something unexpected. Something that would continue the bright, happy, looks-like-summer vibe we have going. I chose lavender. It goes with both the peony pink and the laguna, and I just like the way it looks.
We’re keeping the fun going by adding some accents.
To create the lines on the pineapple, first add a little water to white paint to thin it out. You could use chalk to draw lines on if you’d like, but I just painted mine on freehand. You want light lines, so use a light touch. Paint all the lines going in one direction first, then shift your door hanger and paint the lines going in the other direction.
TIP: The lines go on smoother and more easily if you go quickly.
It’s time to add our highlights. First, paint white zig zags in the lenses of her sunglasses. You’ll then continue using the white paint to add highlights.
When I highlight, my rule of thumb is to highlight the top and left side of what you are painting. So go ahead and add highlights to the fronds, the flowers, and around the sunglasses.
Water down your black paint a bit and use a skinny brush to outline the flowers and her crown.
Finishing Up the Sassy Pineapple Door Hanger
The final detail we need for our sassy pineapple door hanger is – a smile! She wouldn’t be complete without one.
Using a number 3 round tip, paint on a nice, wide smile. Then, add the little dip on one side to create a sassy little smirk! Perfect!
